After a SELLOUT Show at SOHOTHEATRE in London WESTEND (equivalent to off Broadway) performer Sherine Chalhie is coming to Hollywood Fringe to share her funny, entertaining yet dark and poignant solo show!
Meet Isha; a British London Syrian girl who invites you on a vivid journey…
Beginning in the dusty streets of Damascus, then on swiftly to the lion’s den of her Grandma’s house, Isha acquaints us with her colourful and eccentric family, including a certain cousin Mo “Who’s well peng bruv!’ But as she returns to her home in Tottenham she receives an unexpected visit, setting in motion a course of events that stand to shake her world forever and threaten the liberated life Isha so desperately desires.
Why so Syrian? is a funny, yet poignant one-woman show capturing the innocence of first love and the potentially devastating effects of betrayal, abuse and a family bound steadfast by culture and tradition.
PERFORMER: Sherine Chalhie
Sherine studied at Brunel University and graduated with an honours in Modern Drama Studies. She went on to do a One Year Post Graduate in Acting. Sherine has appeared on British Television and films and has years of acting and Theatre experience.
Sherine was so disillusioned by the lack of Arabic female voices in Film, Theatre and TV that she decided to take matters into her own hands and start writing. She wants to tell stories that represent people from her culture and working class backgrounds.
A friend suggested she should make her own work. She said “Just write a one page monologue” Sherine followed her advice however that one page monologue turned into a 60 minute solo show called “Why so Syrian?” Sherine produced and secured funding at a West End Venue in central London all praise to God.
Following on Sherine wrote another play called “Secrets of da Syrian Sisters” as part of Soho Labs and it got shortlisted for the Tony Craze Award 2022.
Sherine has just written and produced her first short film which is a proof of concept for her TV series.
