Thoughtfully staged and emotionally balanced, this play about characters going through hell doesn’t go for pity. We see the way people really act when they’re holding themselves together in the worst of circumstances. I believed the performances and the moments of humor and pathos felt natural.
What I didn't like
The father is written to be fully obsessed with daytime TV and detached. He’s also spent time in prison. I found the actor’s characterization a little too in denial at times, wondering “where is this guy’s anger?”. I’d have been curious to watch him shift tonally over the course of the show.
My overall impression
A thoughtful, honest show acted with respect for the characters, who represent people who are very real. Could have felt like an afterschool special and it really didn’t. That’s notable.
A word about me: I’m studying to be a a therapist and dabble in performance so add those grains of salt to my words about this show. I’m really glad I went and recommend seeing it.
