Josiah’s Character: The Pastor, creates a safe space for audiences to be a part of the show. Referring to us as family and looking out for each other as “church goers” immediately puts the audience on the same team. Josiah’s anecdotes and audience participation puts everyone in an uncomfortable position which allows us to feel the uncomfortable-ness that Josiah felt in his own coming of age story. It’s poignant, fantastic, and smart.

My overall impression
A satirical sermon given to the holiest of us, FLAYED is LA’s hidden gem of fantastic theatre. This show adds elements from every acting technique and is a masterclass in storytelling. Josiah’s vulnerable script and incredibly specific anecdotes give an inside look into his own life growing up in a faith that had only suppressed the best things about him. FLAYED will have you laughing so hard your cheeks hurt one moment and have you crying the next. Dive in and be a part of (literally!) one of Fringe’s best shows featured in the black box.
