The writing ‘turns’ were fun and creative, and Chelsea Smith gave a standout performance.
What I didn't like
It felt the actors were directed to ‘play for comedy’ in a way that prevented me from getting ‘involved’ in the opening solo section, and the the longer first section of the play between the two men. I think the whole play works better, if the “father” was played more dark, and scary in the first third of the play, the charm and humor in the ‘twist’, would be more surprising and fun. The writing felt this should feel/be directed more like “The Bear” and less like “Everybody Loves Raymond” in the comedic sections.
My overall impression
Good show good cast, good writing! Shout out to Chelsea Smith who sparkled in THEBOX, both comedically, with creativity and energy; and dramatically, with a deeply personal performance at different points in the story.
