What I liked

Script, performances, direction.

What I didn't like

I really think they’ve got a terrific thing going on. I cannot really think of something to change, and I’m not being coy.

My overall impression

I saw Detroit in the equivalent of Previews in a Silver Lake backyard. I was immediately taken with the play itself, it’s themes, rhythms & humor (it’s funny!). The performances were warm & smart (a friend was in the show and I was happy they did a wonderful job). Being supportive, I came to the Fringe Festival as well: it was a much better production! Some was the actors having more time with the material and working together, but it was also the intimacy of the space. The actors have less projecting to do than in a backyard, giving the individual and ensemble work more presence both to each other and the audience. It’s basically a 4-character/2-couple show, with an emphasis on how the two women influence one another. Watching all their lives intertwine is a treat in this group’s caring hands – the performances are terrific (not a one to cringe over). Let’s not forget the Director(!): these performances didn’t just spring off the page, wholly formed after a perfunctory reading. This show’s heartbeat was nurtured and orchestrated by someone, and it was done quite well.

I greatly enjoyed Detroit, and think others will, too.
