What I liked

Annex is one of those special shows that draws you in immediately with three-dimensional characters serving slice of life and fully-realized characterizations that feel familiar, vulnerable, and important. The script allows the actors to breathe life into these characters and bring us as the audience along for the ride. I thoroughly enjoyed watching these talented thespians bring this play to life and figure out their conflicts individually and as an interesting family unit.

What I didn't like

One note I have about the show is that it was noticeable when the actor voicing the Belinda Carlisle bowl went from the live microphone to a voice recording. I was left wishing a clearer recording was possible. Also, the run time was a tad bit long. I wonder if a few dialogue exchanges, particularly toward the end, could be cut down for time. Other than that, I can’t think of much else that could be improved.

My overall impression

Annex is a marvel! Maddox Pennington directs with a bold confidence, Charity Sade produces this thing top to bottom with deft skill, the cast is operating at a riveting level of talent, and Nick Foran and Skye Kim’s design work on this show is nothing short of masterful. Their designs are as boisterous as the the cast, both being so engaging that it’s impossible to look away from them as they do their thing. The story, the acting, the overall production, the direction, and the cohesion of this show make this a must-see of the 2023 Los Angeles Fringe Festival.
