What I liked
Exquisitely written, the prose flows in and out of verse and lands in the gut. In the playwright’s notes, Lane St. Sebastian stated that he “needed to put the grief and rage somewhere.” I am grateful and enlightened by the heartache this beautiful creature endured, because from where I sat, the grief and rage were well placed.
Expertly staged with a minimalistic set, the melodrama of this metadrama played out as a living beast in and of itself.
The tech was pretty close to spot-on, and transitions were tight- a first for my HFF 23 experience thus far.
The character work – holy crow! Actors you find who are more connected to the text I dare you to find.
What I didn't like
The actor playing the protagonist, like all the actors, was connected to the text, however delivery felt rushed and rehearsed, and as a result, the chemistry of the love story felt very one-sided to me.
My overall impression
Deliciously dark and darkly hilarious, “Apokalupsis” sweeps you off your feet and stabs you in the heart on a rage/love road-trip from the threshold of light into violent despair and the places in between. Buckle up and buck up; this is worth every penny, and, maybe your soul.
