About the Project

Chacoalhar (Shake Up) is an in-progress monologue by artist Kátia Moraes. After losing her ability to sing professionally, Kátia is finding her voice in new creative paths on stage and revisits vivid memories of her upbringing in Brasil. In doing so, she reveals social, spiritual, cultural, and political aspects of her native country.
The project is supported in part by an investment through the CA Relief Fund for Artists and Cultural Practitioners at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) in partnership with the California Arts Council (CAC).

“(…) unforgettable minutes of surprises and more surprises! Art in the expression of the body vibrating with each chord and rhythm, as if the body itself were a musical instrument. Art in the words that like brushstrokes painted the smell, the visions, the sounds and emotions of the memories of Kátia as a girl.”
- Ana Penido, filmmaker and activist.
