What I liked
Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series is one of the formative artistic works in my life, therefore I love reinterpretations of mythology. Which is funny because I don’t actually know mythology that well, I think I just like epic larger than life beings and stories.
The three highlighted myths were well-told and I’m having trouble picking a standout. The story of the Minotaur and Icarus was heartfelt and devastating, the punishment of Loki full of righteous anger, the monologue by Pan being clever, sexy, and gleeful. I also thought describing a painting was a really effective approach during the final segment.
Monsters is hella queer.
What I didn't like
While I overall loved the section where David spoke of his own mythology, but his performance in it felt… over-rehearsed? It’s subtle issue, difficult to describe and probably bothers no one but me.
My overall impression
I’m so glad I was roped into seeing this show on a whim.
