As a guy who grew up in a Seattle suburb, I am very familiar with the phenomenon of well-to-do kids appropriating and romanticizing the thug life. That said, the ones I knew growing up were white, which is part of what makes this show’s perspective so compelling. This play is a fascinating examination of Blackness, class, and cultural appropriation, but not in a way that feels like being lectured at. In fact, it’s tons of fun.
What I didn't like
Fascinating story well told with nuanced themes. No notes
My overall impression
Well performed, integrating hip-hop in ways that proved both fun and profound.
