The actors were talented, and the minimalist setting made it easier to appreciate the poetry of the lines.
What I didn't like
While couched in a dour story, I was hoping that there would have been more moments of lightness – audible happiness in the recollections, pleasure in the jokes, etc.. But everything felt sad, so it took the oomph out of the tragic moments.
Also, in a script where nearly every physical action is almost superfluously narrated by the main character, the silence during scene changes is very stark. I think I would have liked to see the transitions be blocked in some other way, or be given some physical specificity that allowed the actors to move purposefully through the space.
My overall impression
While ultimately not my cup of tea, Nocturne proves an excellent showcase of the grim and lonely hold that grief has over the heart and body.
