What I liked

Truly Outrageous is one of those unique shows that instantly makes you laugh with three-dimensional characters slinging jokes and personality. The script lets the actors to personify these characters and bring the audience along for the ride. I really liked watching these amazing thespians bring this musical show to life and hash out their conflicts individually and as an interesting musical ensemble unit.

What I didn't like

My one note is I wish there were more cue cards like the one in the beginning that told the audience that we were watching a Flashback. If note transitional cue cards were walked out by the magical character (Synergy, I think?) that let us know we were now at Starlite House or the Rock Concert, it would’ve added extra laughs to the show. Other than that, no notes!

My overall impression

Fun, ridiculous, and heartfelt, Truly Outrageous is a true treat! Jim Blanchette directs with confident know-how, Brandie June produces this dazzling show with intelligent expertise, the cast is firing on all cylinders, and Erica Palay and Rebecca McGlynn’s production design work on this show is nothing short of amazing. Their designs are as spirited as the the ensemble, both being so colorful that it’s hard to look away from them as they dazzle and dazzle. The writing, the acting, the entire production, the direction, and the flow of this show make Truly Outrageous: An Unofficial Jem and the Holograms Musical Parody a Top Ten of the 2023 Los Angeles Fringe Festival!
