What I liked

The telling of history. My understanding is this was based on an NPR interview. I assume key points of the play are historically accurate. I know for a fact that electroshock therapy was used, and again, I made the assumption that the psychiatrist did indeed were a mask at his presentation.

What I didn't like

There were too many scene changes with constant moving of props. This constant shuffling needs to be eliminated.

My overall impression

This past weekend I had the pleasure of seeing the play SICK at the Fringe Film Festival. This is a must see play for today’s youth and history buffs as it looks back on homophobia at the dawn of the gay rights movement, a transition between what was then and that which followed. Some scenes are hard to watch, such as electroshock therapy being used as a “cure” homosexuality to a highly respected gay psychiatrist having to wear a mask to address an audience of his peers. But these things happened. And they can happen again. The cast and crew of SICK have done a great job of reminding us of the struggles and sacrifices of those who came before us. This is an extremely important story and only one of a countless number of stories of personal struggles that have created the world we live in today. Make the time to see this play.
