First, the writing — the play goes to unexpected places. I went into it knowing nothing and thought the relationship between the two characters was going to turn into a stalker drama. But that’s not what this is at all. No spoilers, except to say things are not what they seem. The show tackles issues of female identity, friendship, parent-child relationships and romance in surprising ways. Its ending is bittersweet and makes you question just how you, regardless of your gender, might see yourself.
Second, CARASCHELLSANDEFUR and ASHLEYMCQUESTON are fantastic. The staging requires constant, sometimes highly movement and choreography between the two. It’s almost like a dance between the two performers/ characters.
What I didn't like
A few props might ground the show more, but the bare bones 2-performers and a stage is pretty great as-is.
My overall impression
HAPPYGIRL is a high energy, funny and quirky 2-woman show about a young college student who makes a new friend that isn’t who she seems to be.
