I saw this show during a preview. It stuns me how much money the Taper and Ahmanson put into productions, when there are little no frills gems like Sister Cities playing proudly in tiny theatres. This sparse production at The Underground did not disappoint. I just read the Backstage LA Theatre review and agree wholeheartedly. While I did not see the 2006 production, I cannot imagine anyone else in these roles as these five actresses embraced the characters marvelously. Colette Freedman's witty rapid fire dialogue left me laughing one moment and devastated the next. Dark, disturbing and quite fantastic. This play had me on the edge of my seat as every reveal surprised me. The writing was wry, sardonic and deeply observant into the female psyche. I'm a big fan of plays with casts of all women and Colette Freedman did a wonderful job creating the five diverse voices. The actresses were universally good in their portrayal of the four extremely diverse sisters and the mother's monologue to the audience made me cry. It was an entertaining and moving theater production in an intimate venue. The performances had a great balance of humor and melancholy, of regret and catharsis. Although it was a preview performance, it was very sharp and well honed. All five woman had distinct, specific portrayals and you could feel each actress was engaged with one another enhancing the poignancy of their characters' bonds.
I plan on coming back to watch it again when it officially opens. I'm sure it will be just as good and possibly even better as they refine the production and getting it ever closer to the unattainable, perfection. Bravo!...

This show is seriously AMAZING. Had the craziest 'fringe experience' that a couple had brought their 3 year old to the show and he started talking the second the curtain went up. The actresses were incredibly professional and just kept working. The guy behind me asked the father to take the kid out and I thought their was going to be a fight... but the actresses kept going. Finally, ten minutes in, the father removed his noisy son. So.... most of the audience wasn't sure what was going on in the play since we couldn't help but watch the obnoxious man and his doubly obnoxious kid... still, the actresses kept going and within minutes we were all completely absorbed, hanging on to every word. I definitely want to go back and see this brilliant ...
