Charlotte, the main actress, has amazing takes on the characters, their accents, and physicality. The show also uses music quite a bit (performed by Charlotte of course), and it is timed really well. The crew for the show is wonderful, and they make the sound and lighting design for the show work really well. The blocking and direction, despite it being a small performance venue, is engaging. The story itself is well-written and combines the right amounts of heart and grief to create something memorable.
What I didn't like
The blocking was effective, but it was difficult to see Charlotte from the back rows when she sat down. However, it could also be a limitation of the venue itself.
My overall impression
I was blown away. Charlotte’s (the performer’s) work, from a narrative standpoint, is absolutely beautiful and tells the story in an incredibly captivating, fun, and touching way. It hits really hard when the show focuses on loss, and the show portrays its characters really well. Since this is a one-woman show, it’s also just a phenomenal display of Charlotte’s scope of talent. There is no chance for Charlotte to take a break throughout the show; and you can see laser-focus in continuing this story and its many aspects. Her characters are transitioned seamlessly and are all so distinct and fun to watch. There is a lot of heart, and a surprising amount of touching humor. Looking Past Loss is an intimate work that leaves the audience wanting more. It is, overall, an extremely well-paced and thought-out show, performed by an powerful actress.
