In 1956, a humble, non-assuming black kid named Smitty is befriended by an excited freedom fighter from New York named Louis. Ideals clash when Louis challenges Smitty to join the fight for freedom. This fight for freedom, led by the larger than life Dr. King, stirred up waves of commotion throughout Montgomery, Alabama. During one of these waves, as the Civil Rights Movement begins, Smitty gets a close look at the real-world consequences of racism and those who try to stand up to it. Those consequences prove to be tragic and Smitty is led to do the unthinkable.
Alabama: “An American Story” is a one man, hip hop musical. The well produced, surprising music combined with sharp, witty lyrics trap you in this high stakes world. Craig Smith, the writer, producer, and performer, passionately portrays a litany of characters from Dr. King to racist white men and the main character, Smitty. Smitty is based on Craig Smith’s own grandfather.
This show was workshopped in Kansas City to sold out shows who would leave in tears of encouragement and hope. Some even returned for subsequent shows including Smitty’s widow; Craig Smith’s grandmother. She loved it.
