First and foremost, it’s the performer. Mitch has an ease about him on stage. He’s very comfortable inside each of the hard-nosed characters he plays. I’m a big fan of his Studs Terkel.
The audience also learns a nice history lesson about the goings on in Chicago in the 60s and 70s. I found that stuff fascinating. It’s almost like a Hardcore History podcast episode about the inner guts of Chicago politics during that era.
What I didn't like
Can you improve Royko? Nah.
My overall impression
Just an absolute accomplishment. Mitch does a wonderful job telling gritty grimy stories through three characters for 90 minutes and it’s engaging every moment. The video clips intermingle smoothly with his discussions. The production of this show is all around excellent. It’s a top notch show that I recommend to anyone who happens to be a columnist for a Chicago paper in the 1970s.
