What I liked

Writer/performer BRETT M brings to life the drag persona AURA SUBLIME with Drag Race level perfection; starting out the show with a “yassss” inducing opening lip-sync to get the crowd ready. Yes, it’s a drag performance… At first… But what I expected to be an hour of basic drag fierceness and camp twisted itself into knots and became something much deeper. As Aura peels off the layers of makeup we meet a true human. The person beneath the character. Something that takes Hedwig (of Angry Inch fame) a whole 90 minute run time to accomplish is done within minutes. This performer already knows themself… and they are sharing themself with us.
However, the production isn’t lacking in journey. Through conversations with their mother and lover we watch the performer discover the realities of what it means to be an artist in a world that wasn’t built for them.

The script is quite well done and is definitely going on my short list for the Theatre Theater Playwright Award. The piece is reminiscent of an Angels in America monologue; Prior Walter and I are having a shared dream, but I just get to sit and listen.

What I didn't like

Outside of a Fringe situation I think it could use a little more development in terms of structure. Perhaps it’s longer or at least finds a greater arc? Maybe another lip sync or two? I think it could allow a bit more storytelling, some higher stakes and possibly even a whole additional persona/character to interact with to give us some more meat to bite into.

My overall impression

Fun an joyous and poignant. Clean and clear and under control. This solo show is a must-see!

Though only a recent college graduate, it is clear that Brett is destined for stardom. The piece is honest, fun and funny and with a little more development it could absolutely have a life outside of Fringe.

I highly recommend this piece.
