Shelby Montevirgen is a L.A based spoken word artist, improviser, and storyteller. She has performed on The Moth and has workshopped with Sandra Tsing Loh, Mary Caponegro, and Sandra Cisneros through the guidance of her mentor, poet Marth Ronk. She has also workshopped through Cabrillo College in a small writer’s group. Montervirgen worked as music coordinator for LA’s historic Monday Evening Concerts to premier New Music and also acted as Host and stage manager of Friday Night Jazz at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Currently a teacher, she has returned to the arts and has composed over eighty new improvised pieces as an outlet. Her musical work incorporates a variety of compositional strategies, spoken word, sound art, and is largely improvisational. Many of her pieces meditates upon the relationship within musical mosaics and the structures built to support musicians and their communities. Her visual multimedia often incorporates a naturalist point set against odd geometries. She regularly collaborates with husband and composer Karl Montevirgen.
