My overall impression

The Divine Madness of Isabella is one of the most unique theatrical experiences in the Hollywood area – or any other, for that matter. Using first person narrative, masks, costumes, a number of backstage coconspirators, a sometimes shattered fourth wall and a small army of puppets, writer and actress Wendy Gough brings to life a little-known era in theatrical history through a little-known luminary from that world. As Shakespeare’s brilliance has dimmed to the eyes of history all other celebrities from that time, I’m grateful Miss Gough has brought to light to a modern audience the story of what may be one of the first true female superstars in European Renaissance theater.

With a flawless performance blending talent, masks (which she made herself), mime and other magic tricks from Commedia dell’arte, Miss Gough makes each character on Isabella’s road to theatrical immortality almost as memorable as Isabella herself. Every moment brings the weight of a woman breaking all social conventions of the era as she follows her passion – and the cost she pays for this obsession. And the deft, assured hand of director Jeff Soroka (also Miss Gough’s husband) suggests that he is as enamored by this story as his wife.

I have seen this show a number of times over the years and have enjoyed watching it grow. But the thrill I felt while seeing such an unforgettable play for the first time has not passed with the most recent viewing. The Divine Madness of Isabella is a masterpiece of writing, mixed media and impeccable acting. Go see it.
