My overall impression
A deep and detailed portrayal of Latinx folks and the community they had built within gang culture. The humanity that was offered and protected throughout the piece reflected what has been missing in other portrayals of Latinx people in other forms of media. The piece points to the oppressive violence these folks were (and are) faced with to survive day-to-day. It makes one reflect on what types of harm are marked as “criminal” and “unlawful” and which are not.
The familial ties between the cast were so incredibly clear, and the vulnerability of the actors offered provided so much space to witness and be affected by their journeys. With a touch of the abstract and incredible grounded truth-telling, Royal Flush invokes connection and reflection seamlessly. Truly a sight to see.
