In Britain, the ‘pantomime’ is a traditional Christmas musical: using classic fairytales mixed with modern songs and bawdy humor, it’s a delight for the whole family.
My project is modeled after this tradition and infuses it with a little more edge: the Prince in this story is a lazy, yet arrogant thrill-seeker and womanizer, who goes on a journey with his Stable Boy (played by a woman) to escape his ever-disappointed parents. They come across a city not unlike Vegas (on steroids)- where the party never stops and the order of the day is decadence, drugs and all-night orgies. An older gentleman sitting off to the side tells the Prince and Stable Boy about a nearby castle, where almost 100 years ago a young Princess pricked her finger on a heroin-filled needle and fell asleep, along with the entire court. Legend has it, that only a real prince can awaken her with a kiss- and, upon waking, she will fall in love with the first person she sees. The Prince decides that it is his fate and duty to wake her- not only will he end up with a beautiful piece of arm candy for a wife, but perhaps his parents will finally be proud of him! But first… he wants to spend another night with a Drag-Showgirl named Amica he has become quite smitten with…
The next day, they set out. The Stable Boy is happy to leave the town behind and escape the hedonism he was confronted with- but is also dubious about the Prince’s motives in wanting to marry this Princess. He knows that the Prince has developed strong feelings for Amica… but the Prince gets angry when confronted with this reality. He says there is no way he can take them home to his parents… the only way for him to redeem himself and return a hero is by rescuing the Princess.
Unbeknownst to the two, Amica is following them through the woods, distraught and heartbroken after being abandoned. They have decided to see their competition for themselves…
At the castle, final decisions have to be made… will the Prince follow his heart and proclaim his love for Amica…. or abandon them for the chance of being ‘a hero’ and returning home with a pure-bred Princess on his arm..? It’s a tale as old as time itself with a new twist… but let’s just say- fairytales are supposed to have happy endings, are they not..!?
