What I liked

It is just so funny!! I never thought I’d be laughing so much coming out of a play about abortions. I also learned a lot. In all the fun, the creative duo take the time to lay down important facts like maternal and infant mortality rates among Black women, and different ways in which people have attempted at-home abortion methods that lead to infertility or death. They present facts and statistics in a way that engages, entertains, and leaves you

What I didn't like

There were a couple of continuity things that stood out to me during the performance, particularly in the timeline of when everything happens. But it wasn’t distracting. It also might have just been an accidental flub on stage when one of the actors said “yesterday” instead of “two days ago”. Very minor.

My overall impression

This is a must watch for Hollywood Fringe! On the surface it’s about getting an abortion, but really it’s a celebration. It’s a celebration of friendship. Of family. Of independence. Of being young and reckless. Of Black joy! It’s also heartwarming. Underneath the layers and layers of humor, it takes the time to address serious issues that young women face. It explores gender, sexuality, reproductive access, medical care, consent, and more. Jairis and Mareshah express what it means to be deeply creative people. This show will have to twerking and singing “Abortion Weekend”!
