This entire piece is so rooted in love that it permeates the entire atmosphere of the room from the moment Mareshah enters calling for their grandma all the way to the closing moments when Jairis joins in the duet to bring us all gently home. My soul was fed, my heart was softened.
What I didn't like
I would have liked to see more dynamic blocking; facing out in split-screen for a majority of the piece let us see both of your faces but it also meant that we as an audience didn’t get to witness as much of your electric chemistry as you both have and so generously offer.
My overall impression
This piece of art is a triumph of storytelling, of characterization, of love. Both performers embody what it means to be young, gifted, and unapologetically black. This is a performance rooted in love, and all the ways that love can transform and triumph in unexpected ways. If you can only see one show this year at fringe, make it this show.
