What I liked

I really enjoyed the performances from the queens, and how they involved the audience as if we were really there. The relationship between the characters were believable and the story never felt rushed, while still being able to deal with the conflicts within the ensemble.

What I didn't like

I really wanted more Kandi. Her character was great, but it never felt like we really got to dig deep with her background or her growth like we did with the rest of the ensemble. Her monologue was powerful and one of the best moments of the show, but they needed to keep the light on her the entire time. It was slightly jarring to see the rest of the cast find their resolutions while Kandi repeatedly faded to black while speaking. She needed to be illuminated throughout the entire monologue (even if the lights dim on her), while also shining light on the rest of the cast during their moments. I also loved the dance sequence at the beginning but if the music volume was a little louder, it would really help to convey the desired atmosphere of the club.

My overall impression

I thoroughly enjoyed this performance. The cast absolutely oozed charisma from start to finish, and every character had a satisfying arc to really flesh out their stories. Mother was a wonderful leader of the troupe, and it was heartwarming to watch the family come together. I will be attending the encore performance to continue the journey at the Paradise of Angels.
