What I liked
I was continually struck by how unapologetic but thoughtful the writing was. Some of Kathleen’s remarks could easily cause eye rolls in Los Angeles, but Katierose’s writing and acting (and Corey Podell’s directing!!!!) make sure it comes forth as genuinely as possible, from a place of needing connection—and that softens any guard immediately. Hilariously embodied leading to some great physical comedy. Fast-paced with delicious pauses right where we need them. For every loud laugh, I felt my heart pang for Kathleen, because I know her. And knowing that Katierose knows her too, well enough to bring her to life this way, helped me feel understood. It’s just really powerful.
What I didn't like
This is the 12th show I’ve seen this season and is by FAR my favorite. It’s GOLDEN. I wouldn’t change a heckin’ thing.
My overall impression
The quality of this show cannot be overstated. Katierose embodies the scrappy but charming, loving but fierce, and grounded but scared Kathleen in this riveting, hilarious solo show. From the second the show starts, you know you’re in good hands and NO B.S. will be served for the entire hour. It’s thoughtful substance all the way through. I laughed so hard and so often. I could literally feel my empathy expand. And I questioned my own life choices. It was everything you could possibly ask for in a piece of theatre. GO! SEE! IT!
