The characters are stand-out here. Doris makes for a great protagonist, determined and tough, but also flawed enough to give her character growth and something for the audience to root for. She starts at the bottom, works her way up to team manager, and then further up from there. It’s a really effective arc. Bucket Seat Betty, as her main rival, is another standout.
The music is a winner too – with some really catchy songs you’ll find yourself humming later on. The title song especially! And that twist about the Derby Team also being birth control smugglers? Totally didn’t see that coming, but it’s a smart way to weave in the broader theme of women fighting the power.
What I didn't like
The sound mixing was a bit off in the beginning, and it was difficult hearing what Doris was saying. But otherwise, such an enjoyable show!!
My overall impression
Such an enjoyable ride! “High Heels of Wheels” covers so many unique topics: roller derby, the ’60s, counter culture, queerness, coming of age, feminism, and it does an awesome job of weaving everything together. Our main protagonist, Doris, has got dreams bigger than her hometown and the show does a great job of building a compelling journey for her.
