The tale of somewhat naive and sheltered Doris finding her sexual identity and power through roller derby is original and fun. The issues brought up in the show are as pertinent today as they were then, especially birth control and women’s rights. The creators navigate these serious political issues with an uplifting story, unique characters that we can really relate to, and songs that engage the audience.
What I didn't like
This show works great in the fringe, but it would be fun to see it move to bigger venues with the added element of actual roller derby skating.
My overall impression
This new musical by Leslie Sloane and Eliza Jane Morris really moves! With top notch performances and a great book and score, the show takes the audience to the exciting niche world of female roller derby in the 1960’s.
