Steven does an incredible job playing different characters, and keeping them just an complex as the main character. Even though Gabriel’s father is the antagonist of the story, or presented so at first, we get to see his tender underbelly which makes everything he has to say more compelling. Steven did a great job balancing the pain an overbearing, authoritative, and even possibly abusive parent can cause a child, with the love they do have for them. No easy task!
What I didn't like
There was one particularly long conversation in the car between Gabriel and his Dad in which they tackle many important, challenging topics together. I applaud Steven’s stamina in sustaining playing those two characters for so long, but perhaps is could be broken up into 2 scenes, or interspersed with monologue/reflection.
My overall impression
A beautiful, heart-warming story of a young, queer black man coming into adulthood while reconciling his difficult relationship with his father, and exploring the intersection of race and sexuality. Steven imbues his writing and acting with vulnerability, humor, and ethereal beauty.
