What I liked
Each member of the ensemble cast puts forth great comical and vocal performances, most notably Shanelle Darlene as the heroic Black Canary and Amilcar Jauregui as the titular “Music Meister.” The script was tight and snappy and peppered with occasional hilarious fourth-wall-breaking meta humor. The action and dance scenes were well-staged and choreographed, making great use of the limited performance area.
What I didn't like
A larger performance area would have served the production well considering the scale of this superhero epic. The volume of the backing musical track seemed a tad low at times.
My overall impression
“Mayhem…” is a fantastically creative and ambitious adaptation of the classic Batman animated musical episode, featuring great action set pieces, uproarious comedy and beautifully executed musical numbers. The costume and production design display an artistic indie charm that illustrates the creators’ passion for the theater, this project, and its source material.
