What I liked
I loved Jo’s performance which is both hilarious and also extremely touching at times. She channels her volcanic past, present and future in one continuous thread (linear and often non-linear at well). What seems like a straightforward story, soon reveals a multitude of layers that stay with you long after the play is finished. The directing is thoughtful, subtle and fortunately doesn’t get in the way of the maelstrom of emotions that Jo courageously unveils on stage, literally bearing her soul for everyone to see.
What I didn't like
Honestly I didn’t find anything to fault. I would have maybe liked a slightly more elaborate amd playful set (if budget allowed), but I would have mostly loved the runtime being longer than it is. I was mesmerized by Jo’s performance and every single one of the story vignettes (especially the cross-species one), so I naturally wanted it to go on and on and on, like a book you hope that never ends. Would easily watch it again.
My overall impression
Boy Crazy Psycho Slut is a blast. Time flew by and I was entertained throughout while also being privy to Jo’s inner life. This show made me laugh, cry, but most of all think about all the aspects of one’s human life that often go unnoticed. There is so much going on in other people’s lives that we so often don’t know about, even if they’re friends or family. The complexity but also universality of the human condition is wonderfully portrayed here, with a raw resonance and a poetic poignancy I have rarely seen on stage. If you are lucky to catch this show, GO WATCH IT IMMEDIATELY.
