I really liked the progression of the stories from youth through to adulthood. It provided a lot of interesting perspective on love and the challenges, beautiful moments and heartbreak that can come with it. It added a nice complexity to the character that built along throughout the performance. I also liked the three additional personas (Mom, Sam and Dog)…it added nice context and depth. And finally, the punctuations of humor were placed well.
What I didn't like
Jo’s storytelling in the adolescent and adult scenes felt more natural and relatable. As a parent, I had a hard time connecting to the two youngest personas as the language, behavior, and storytelling felt a bit too complex/adult. It was still interesting…but I think those scenes would have been elevated with a more authentic youthful tone and queues (oftentimes more subtle in nature…and not quite as pointed…because kids rarely tell a concise story).
My overall impression
Amazing storytelling. Jo had me whole-heartedly engaged the whole time.
