I love that Kira deconstructs and examines her past through personal stories, pieces them all together and eventually arrives at the reflection of her true self. The transformation is revelatory. I also loved her use of chapters to bring us on her journey, her sharp characterizations of her family members and how anyone who has struggled with their identity can deeply resonate with her story no matter what their background is. Brava, Kira!

My overall impression
Honest, endearing and vulnerable, Caught In The Mix combines personal stories with issues from our culture at large… colorism, putting whiteness on a pedestal and so much more.
