The West Coast premiere of the latest play from award-winning Welsh playwright Owen Thomas (Best International Production for ‘Richard Parker’). Played by acclaimed Welsh actors Gareth John Bale (who is also the director) and Gwenllian Higginson, ‘West’ tells the universal and surprisingly timely story of a couple who fall in love and decide to leave Wales in order to build a new life in the New World at a time during the 19th Century when countless people left their homeland of Wales to seek their fortune in the USA. Many wanted adventure, the chance to own their own land or simple the chance to start again. Along the way, these emigrants faced many dangers and tribulations. Some succeeded, some gave up and some fell by the wayside. Those who made it went on to establish roots and bloodlines that grow and flow through the USA to this very day.
‘West’ written in a lyrical, poetic style and presented using minimal set and a physicalized performance style, details the hardships and adventures the couple faced, focusing primarily on the theme of immigration, speaking to the global experience of emigrants everywhere.
‘West’ was commissioned by the North American Festival of Wales, Milwaukee, WI, and had its world premiere in September 2019 to standing ovations.
