What I liked

The choreography and staging in this show was incredibly well done and elevated the storytelling. Even though we were listening to different women’s accounts of their experience in the United States, the staging and acting really created a sense of community on stage. I felt so comforted by this show. It successfully created a sense of home and warmth on stage. I also loved that the throughline of the show was Estrella who represented the next generation. They are the ones who will tell the stories of our mothers and loved ones. It reminded me that our history is ours to tell because we know it best. This show demonstrates the value and importance oral storytelling has in preserving our history for generations to come. The lighting, the costuming and just everything about this show was so thoughtful. Congratulations to the cast and crew on such a beautiful show!

What I didn't like

Nothing! I’m just sad they don’t have more shows because this show deserves to be seen by many more!

My overall impression

This show dives deep into the experience of immigrant women traveling to and living in the United States through oral storytelling. WOW! This show emanates so much LOVE! It truly is a love letter to the resilience and grit of immigrant women. The story of immigrant mothers can often get reduced to the hardships they face but what I love about this show is that it really showcases their triumph and joy alongside their struggle. Each woman’s story was handled with so much care and it showed. Caminos: A Mother’s Journey created a beautiful multi-faceted portrait of immigrant Latinx women. The writing was so enthralling. It really felt like I was listening to my tias tell me their stories over some cafecito Each character was very specific and masterfully acted. I could see my family members in each character.
