Sweet Alice is a solo show about Sweet Alice Harris – the unsung hero of the Watts community. Philicia explores the life and times of Sweet Alice as she rebuilds the city following its horrific civil unrest in the summer of 1965. The show reveals that being black in America now might not look so different from being black in the 1960s. Racial tensions, police brutality, bias and privilege are some themes that will be unpacked. As we unfold Sweet Alice’s life and involvement in Watts, Philicia parallels her own life with Sweet Alice’s, rethinking her own privilege as a young black woman in Los Angeles.
