About the Project

African-American neighborhoods across the US face environmental injustices. It is not uncommon for these neighborhoods to be built upon toxic waste dumps. Little league football teams regularly practice on fields where toxic waste barrels linger nearby. As a direct result of this exposure, Charlie was diagnosed with Cancer at the age of 16 in 1993. After several surgeries and months of chemotherapy Charlie was healed. Well, his body was healed. Experiencing trauma in childhood can result in severe and long-lasting effects. When childhood trauma is not resolved, a sense of fear and helplessness carries over into adulthood, setting the stage for further trauma. Thus was the case with Charlie. The trauma associated with a serious illness in his youth led Charlie to several addictions like sex, alcohol and illegal activities. These activities led him to women with violent outbursts. After being shot by one woman and physically attacked by another Charlie lost the will to live. After a friends suggestion, Charlie finally decides to get the help he needs. This show is a wild roller-coaster ride of passion, anger, hurt, comedy and transparency as Charlie sits down with his therapist to seek healing, answers and the peace he’s been so desperately seeking since his cancer diagnosis 25 years ago.
