Told through comedy, original music, and highly physical storytelling, Big Gay Debutante Ball is a one-woman show about a femme lesbian’s journey out of hiding, from the first terrifying moment of “oh no I’m gay!” to the daily struggle for visibility: “trust me I’m gay!”
It’s a unique, multi-disciplinary spectacle ranging from intimate autobiographical stories, theatrical and emotive dance breaks, multi-character scenes, and original songs created by looping beats and vocal harmonies on a looping pedal.
The show begins with a comedic prelude depicting the many phases of coming out of the closet, and then launches into the “longer story” which begins with Meg as a child on the playground when she first realizes she’s gay.
The scenes unfold from denial to fear to a full-on unapologetic rap-song whose chorus rings out for all LGBT+ people who struggle to reconcile the love and anger they feel when faced with a homophobic parent: “Mamma I love you, but I got me desire divine and I ain’t going to my grave in a straight line”.
The show ends in a regal and fabulous debutante bow as Meg powerfully and humbly claims her seat as an out and very visible femme lesbian.
