What I liked
I liked the fusion of performance and writing styles. Malaika moves seamlessly between monologue, poetry and rap while telling a well charted story of a young woman finding her self confidence. I found the show to a very relatable coming of age story, one that has a happy ending that I would have liked for myself.
What I didn't like
I hope that Ms. Jules has the opportunity to continue refining and performing this piece. The piece is already so insightful and well honed, but I wonder where she would take it with more writing time. Great show!
My overall impression
“90’s hip hop raised me” is a well thought out, thought provoking, sometimes fun, sometimes angry making piece with style that is unique to Ms. Malaika Jules.
