What I liked

#Cancelled was a fantastic 50-minute show with a unique script, a highly-talented cast & some hilarious moments.

MacLaughlin’s writing, producing and directing give us an accessible, fast-moving comedy – that successfully builds outlandish (yet believable) characters into a compelling narrative. The ending provides a thought-provoking cap on light-natured previous acts. The use of an instagram feed to bridge acts and move the story along is perfect.

Amina, Conway and Guthrie are all outstanding as co-leads. Amina convinces us from the get-go that she is Miss D and carries her performance through the different stages of her character’s development. Conway is compelling, quick, and hilarious throughout, bringing a high-energy performance and a tough character to life with seamless ease. Guthrie does an excellent job growing into her performance as her character evolves and ends on a high. Murphy does a stellar job throughout, producing an instantly familiar character and exhibiting great chemistry with all.

What I didn't like

The script could be written out to add 10-20 minutes to the play. MacLaughlin should consider trying to build out the middle section before the climax in the narrative arc, in any future productions of this play.

My overall impression

A must-see debut production – High energy, smart writing, great performances.
