Dying for Our Voices: the title of a Fringe project at the Studio/Stage venue. The multimedia presentation dramatizes how journalists are being threatened, even killed, around the world.
In the U.S. freedom of the press is protected by the First Amendment. Freedom of expression – which includes a journalist’s freedom (and that of an artist) to receive and impart information – is also a human right.
What are the human rights?
This interactive workshop is a companion piece to Dying for our Voices. It is put on by Youth for Human Rights (YHR), a non-profit organization dedicated to human rights education. (See YHR has chapters around the world; most of its video and written materials have been translated into 18 languages. In the workshop you’ll learn what your – and everyone’s – rights are. And what we can do to make these rights more of a reality in today’s world. You’ll see award-winning videos and get materials which make these rights easy to understand.
The workshop will emphasize freedom of expression, but will cover the other human rights as well – because to greater or lesser degree, all of them are infringed in our community and more so in other parts of the world.

The two workshops, panel discussion, and light meal will be held at the following venue:
Epiphany Space
1763 North Gower Street (East and West Gallery)
Hollywood, CA 90028

Contact: [email protected]

There are two workshops:
Saturday, June 15th from 2 pm – 3 pm
Saturday, June 22nd from 2 pm – 3 pm

Following each workshop there will be an open house, where you’ll have the opportunity to view videos dramatizing the rights and showing their history. There will also be a visual display of materials from YHR and the Committee to Protect Journalists, as well as an introduction of the Committee’s book The Last Column. See (

Panel Discussion:
On June 22, following the workshop there will be a panel discussion about The Last Column and the state of press freedom in today’s world — and what we can do about it.

Panel date and time:
June 22, 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm
Moderator and Guests: TBD
Light Meal from 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm

Attendance at one of the workshops or at the panel discussion will guarantee you an opportunity to have a light meal with the cast of Dying for Our Voices. At the above events you will be given a ticket stub which will be used to gain you entry for the light meal. SAVE YOUR TICKET.
