Fun dramatic games mixed with fun stories and trivia. And Brett’s such an open, honest guy that it’s easy to fall in love with baseball BECAUSE of him.
What I didn't like
If I was pushed, maybe I’d say the blend of personal story and memory tricks could have been a bit more smooth, but I’d be obnoxiously nitpicky if I said that, so forget I even entertained the thought.
My overall impression
Fantastic. I’m an acquaintance to baseball – I love being at a live game and I’ll get into whatever happens to be on TV, but to appreciate BATTER UP, you need only be passionate about something – anything. Brett does a fascinating and hugely entertaining job of showing his “stupid human trick” of his freakishly good memory, but it’s not the goofy act of memory that shines through – it’s that the deep, deep love of everything baseball is attached to it. The drama comes from the in-show games hoping Brett can guess the correct names or numbers, but the heart has nothing to do with statistics. This man cares DEEPLY about baseball. And his convictions and love instill the audience with the same reverie. If you love anything passionately, you will love BATTER UP.
