What I liked

Yvette Saunders is a multifaceted talent serving as both powerhouse actor and playwright. Watching her move emotionally from one character to the other flawlessly was definitely the highlight of the experience.

What I didn't like

Each time Saunders left the stage, there were huge amounts of dead stage time while she changed into the next character. While these gaps between scenes were covered with interesting historical clips, we began to lose the continuity of the story as the play progressed. Perhaps simpler costume changes done onstage, or fewer jumps back and forth between the two time periods would have helped.

My overall impression

M.O.M.S. gives us a glimpse into the life of Moms Mabley through the eyes of a woman in the late 70s who has just been raped and is trying desperately to cope. The piece is a clever vehicle for this fascinating piece of history, but left me wanting to know much more about the comedian who paved the way for so many to follow.
