What I liked

As I said the set up is perfect. If MOM’s were around today we would build an animated series or short special around her. I liked the movie clips that took us back in time to the early years of MOM’s career. Things displayed in these clips could be elaborated on or clarified in some way. Maybe the lighting could focus more on the curtains MOM’s will come out of. The show didn’t shy away from all of who MOM’s was, on and off stage.

What I didn't like

The transition between Yevette becoming the troubled woman and MOM’s could be smoother. The overall pacing of the show could be tighter. The troubles of the woman clearer. When she was going to take her life that seemed a little extreme for what we had seen her dealing with. It didn’t feel like it was that bad for her to take her life.Bring MOM’s into the show earlier. Get to the heart of the show ,which is Mom’s . Playing the phonograph record of MOM’s was an interesting hint of what is to come but can that be made stronger? Maybe a few lines of the woman talking to the record cover. Possibly she wishes she could handle her man the way MOM’s said she handled her’s. The introduction of MOM’s sexuality was cool but could be more fun. Perhaps have Yevette come out as MOM’s on stage and change into drag in front of the audience. While she is changing she could be talking about how MOM’s liked her “young men” when she was on stage , but after the show was over what MOM’s really liked was her “young ladies” etc. Last of all what would MOM’s say about current events if she were alive today? She wasn’t overtly political but she had a way of getting social commentary into her routine in subtle but effective ways. What would MOM’s say about the homeless, Don Trump, the racist climate of the country, the border crisis, making America great again, Pres. Obama ? That would be an interesting spin to take.

My overall impression

My impression of M.O.M.S.is very positive. I love the premise ,a woman needing mentoring in her love life. As part of her stand up routine Moms always gave advice on the do’s and don’ts of love. Yevette, did a nice job setting the stage for this troubled lady who needed Mom’s advice. While I understand it is a one woman show, it would be nice if she could have someone else play that character and she focused her talents on playing MOMS. I actually wanted to see more of MOMs and parts of her classic signature lines. Nevertheless Yevette did a lovely job balancing between the two characters.
