What I liked
I really appreciated how nuanced all the characters were. It took awhile for me to warm up to the mother, but it was a huge payoff when we found out about the mom’s background. The play was well-written, very emotional and moving. Loved the Christian mass scene. Loved the actor who played the guidance counselor – so likable, grounded, and real. Also loved the actor who played the religious studies professor, and just loved the way she was written. Loved the way the gay friend was written too. I guess I loved the way they all were written haha. I really appreciated dealing with the subject of addiction (both to drugs and religion), and it all came from a true, real place (childhood trauma). Hurt people hurt people, and I think this play really did a great job of illustrating that point
What I didn't like
The different accents of the characters confused me a little – I think it would’ve helped clarify it for me if they were all consistent accents, or if it was explained that the mom was from a different town and that’s why her accent was different, or something like that.
My overall impression
thought-provoking, nuanced, moving piece on religion, addiction, family, and trauma
