In a way, I was reminded of the same approach that “Vice” took to sensationalize the story of the rising of Dick Cheney. My only constructive note would be that I was left wanting a bit more about why Lee believed in what he did.
Also, the choice to colorblind cast George W. was a fine choice, but it did bring with it a new perspective to some lines that I questioned whether the original intent became misconstrued.
My overall impression
A fascinating biodrama filled with wit and an exceptional performance by Ben Hethcoat. From the POV of Lee Atwater, we watch him rise through the political ranks, break conventions, and change the system. The script carefully deviates from its A-plot from time to touch on Lee’s love life. An extremely enjoyable play from a solid theatre producing team. You will leave the theater ready to Google Lee Atwater and find out more.
