What I liked
This show manages to make some very astute observations about our nation’s political past that absolutely paved the road to an America that feels so divided today. Without ever feeling like a period piece, this show is a fascinating view into who we are now as a nation and where we might have made mistakes in the past to get us here.
The entire cast strikes the perfect tone of caricature and sincerity. Ben Hethcoat’s performance as Atwater provides a rock solid base for the entire show, the cast manages to offer up a fascinating tussle of wills and moral stances. The natural charm Atwater exudes wins the audience over even as he’s making some truly questionable points on the exploitation of human nature.
What I didn't like
In the very final scenes, I yearned for a bit more information about events that are left offstage. (Historical perspective of some kind, to be more clear.) After such an enjoyable show, I wanted a clearer stronger ending for one character in particular.
My overall impression
A very fun show. A highly entertaining glimpse into a part of this nation’s political history. Following the rise of political strategist Lee Atwater, this show deftly entertains as it is making some valid points about the political stance of the people we elect to lead us.
