The writing was crisp and clear, even quotable, at times. The characters were well drawn and executed. The direction was precise and moved the show along at a clip with simple staging, effective video work, and an attention to moments of heightened performance that really elevated the production. As Lee Atwater, lead actor Ben Hethcoat was phenomenal. This was my first Hollywood Fringe show and I can’t imagine anyone being any better. The epitome of a leading man on stage. Elsewhere, actors Dennis Gersten and David McElwee really popped in their early scenes (and throughout), and actress Corsica Wilson both looks and feels completely out of the 1980’s. Not a weak link in an exceptional cast. And, I particularly enjoyed the use of the audience as members of the campaign team.
What I didn't like
The production doesn’t always strike a successful balance between Atwater as a political insider, and Atwater’s personal life. Some of the moments with his ‘other woman’ felt somewhat forced and unnecessary in a show that spends a lot of time telling us how influential and revolutionary he was, while also making him seem like just another Washington politico. I also found the show’s femininity to be at odds with itself from time to time.
My overall impression
A tremendously impressive effort about a political insider whom most people probably don’t realize is responsible for a large part of the world they live in right this second. Solid writing, inventive staging, dazzling performances abound. A fine way to kick off my L.A. theatrical experience!
