You know, the thing I initially had a problem with turned into one of my favorite aspects – the darkness with backlit video. (The video, by the way, oh my God, was simply astounding. Nice work, Seb.) It took me a few minutes to get this choice, but as it continued and I got used to it, I found it very bold and interesting.
What I didn't like
Anything I would say in terms of improvement is simply a matter of degrees and personal taste. Tweaking the lighting, even when most of the show is in darkness? Sure, I might do that. Utilizing the puppets in a different way? Sure, I might do that. But I might do that. In terms of this production, I think it was carried out exactly as planned and was a home run.
My overall impression
I am woefully late in writing this review…
“The Journey of the Little Prince” was a perfect show for this Fringe… or any Fringe! I’d forgotten most of the original story and this production did a wonderful job of hitting me from a completely different angle than the story did when I was a kid… because that’s what it’s about: being a kid. Or rather, STAYING a kid and not letting becoming an adult stunt your growth.
Sweet performances, a very unique design element, and a wonderful message that can’t be heard too often.
